WHAT IS CHEMISTRY?

Traditionally chemistry is the busiest of the departments!
It deals with your glucose tests, your electrolytes, and so many more!

Another cool thing about the Chemistry lab, is you examine all different types of specimens like urine, blood, CSF and more!
BUT in our lab, we like to examine fun things like sugars, crystals, and sometimes even salt!
In the Candy Lab, urine is just candy syrup — and its color changes depending on what candy ingredients are floating around inside it... Different mixes = different colors = different clues!
When you Dip Cotton candy in water it dissolves
TRY IT FOR YOUR SELF!!!

As we just saw, certain candies have the ability to change the color of water creating different types of syrups!

Normal

Sometimes our syrups can be a funky color which requires us to have a closer look and see what ingredient are causing that color change

*ALARM*

we need to take a closer look

here you’re checking if the candy syrup is too sour, too sweet, or just right

Now it is time to find out what this all means...

Lets dip a sour rainbow strip into the syrup and watch the color change

LETS DIP AND WATCH THE MAGIC HAPPEN!!

The different colors of our rainbow strip tells us more information of what's inside our syrup

From there we need to get a closer look for a better understanding of our candy

Here are some things we can expect to see when taking a closer look...

ROCKETS

CRYSTALS

can appear in different shapes and colors

most commonly seen if our syrup is red

RED SWEDISH BERRIES

they are fast movers so make sure you pay attention or else you could miss them!

WORMS

PULLAPART TWIZZLERS

SPARKLY SUGARS

these can be seen in the background of our syrups

are hard to see with an untrained eye... see if you are able to spot them!

Now lets have a look at one of our *alarm* syrups

Did you see anything strange... because I sure did!

There appears to be some candy bugs in our syrup - YUCK!!

If we see this, it's not a good sign as we do not want creepy crawlies in our syrup

Good thing we took a closer look at our weirdly colored syrups, otherwise we would have missed this diagnosis!

Congratulations!

You have successfully examined an entire syrup sample to uncover what makes it sticky
